Once you set the height of the arm by adjusting the collar on the mounting post it is permanently set (unless you readjust the collar). With the height set, your adjustments with the monitor are tilt and rotation, swing and distance from the post; you cannot raise or lower the monitor. There are two ways to mount this arm; by clamping to the edge of your desk or table (for which you'll need a good edge to allow full clamp depth) and by drilling a hole in your desktop and using a metal flange and large wing nut. For both Ergotron arms I own I chose the "through-the-desktop" method and drilled a hole. Of the two mounting choices this is by far the stronger of the two.
